Since the articles I was to design these layouts for were about graffiti and its local culture, I wanted to give the piece a hard-edged look, something which would make the reader think of bricks and buildings and cities.
In the first, a piece about the interaction between street artists and the established art community in San Diego, I went with color bars and grids to offset the softer, more organic look of the featured art. The second used 3dStudio Max to create the brick backgrounds and give a darker feel to this article, about one San Diego street artist and his dream to be recognized as something more than a lawbreaker. All photos (execpt for panels 5 and 6) were shot and edited by me.
